I am Michael Smearer, a hands-on Software Architect with over 25 years’ dedication to engineering excellence. Engaged, curious, innovative, pragmatic, empathetic, creative, and accountable.
I have spent the last 25+ years writing code, continually learning, exploring, iterating, and honing engineering decision-making. I have helped build several large platforms, dozens of line-of-business applications, and too-many-to-count proof-of-concepts.
Expertise in all things .Net, Azure PaaS, IoT, web UI and API, OAuth/OIDC, SQL, devops, distributed systems, microservices, observability, event-driven architecture, domain-driven design.
I enjoy building long-term relationships with companies that have clear missions. I am comfortable as an engineer, a lead, making or helping with architectural decisions, providing clear and concise documentation, and acting as a pure consultant if there are large questions around a process or particular technology. We can talk through an ongoing or project-based engagement.
I have spent my life in the water. I grew up on Lake Ontario, swimming, paddling, and boating. I moved out west, where I sailed the San Francisco Bay and did the Alcatraz swim many times. Now on the Puget Sound, I'm swimming US Masters and an avid boater.
These three places are represented by the three photos above. The first of those holds many fond memories and where my love of water began - Lake OnTARIo. LUMA involves the latin root for "light". In Old Norse, luma means "to hold tight". The name is my reminder to keep the light of Lake Ontario close.
